SMART CITY TECHNOLOGY

At AFN, we strive for innovative smart solutions for our Council's to provide a safe and prosperous community.

We believe everyone deserves an efficient, clean, and safe community.

Our involvement with Bayside Council

In response to community concerns, Bayside Council turned to AFN Solutions to deter the following concerns:

  • Anti-social behaviour

  • Illegal parking

  • Hooning

  • Loitering

A technological solution was deemed the best fit for the issues experienced in Bayside as it would allow the Council to enforce offences that occurred outside normal operating hours, provide CCTV Surveillance and evidence for Local Area Command (LAC) to investigate and prosecute anti-social behaviour.

The deployment has already proven to be successful, with up to a 90% reduction in anti-social vehicle behaviour which has led to positive community sentiment.

We have seen a 75-80% drop in repeat offenders parking illegally or undertaking acts of dangerous driving.

Our community have also told us they have seen a 90% decrease in hooning and illegal driving.

- Ben Thompson, Manager of Business Transformation at Bayside Council

Our involvement with Smart Cities

Our involvement with Smart Cities began when we worked with the team at Cairns Regional Council (CRC). When we first began working with CRC, we had the opportunity to translate all that we offer, to solve real problems, not just for the company, but for the betterment of society.

Having worked with CRC, and many others since then, including the City of Darwin, we learnt that a city cannot exist without its people.

A societies quality of life is the basis for change.

Data-driven insights, economic growth, and sustainability are also key factors that drive this change.

Ultimately, these three components build the framework for a Smart City.

Our Smart Technology is enabling and empowering communities to realise their full potential

Smart Lighting Systems

With the need for more environmentally friendly and ecologically sustainable resources at the forefront, the need to provide adequate lighting for safety purposes in public spaces is countered by the need to maintain minimal electricity usage and costs.

The implementation of LED lighting in public spaces can assist in this regard, with the technology now going one step further and providing lighting depending on how populated the location may be.

All LED lighting products are configurable with NEMA 7 smart nodes as well as offering integrated solar options for both street and pathway lights.

Wi-Fi Connectivity

Opening access to the public Wi-Fi for visitors will help promote local tourism as well as facilitate the gathering of analytics to generate deeper insights into visitor demographics within the region.

Access to the internet is a service that is valued and often expected by visitors to a business or tourist point of attraction.

Public Wi-Fi can also be used to support local infrastructure (such as smart lighting, parking, and bin sensors).

Waste Management

Our integrated waste management solutions include compaction, sensing, route optimisation, and emissions reduction. Council's benefit from direct cost savings, a greener environment and cleaner cities.

Community benefits include:

  • Compactible bins reducing collection by effectively increasing bin capacity by up to 8 times

  • Smart waste collection planning using real-time data to optimise resource allocation

  • Lowers operational costs by up to 80%

  • Utilises renewable energy and reduces CO2 emissions

  • Eliminates overflowing bins

  • Improves public cleanliness/sanitisation

  • Smart IoT platform with Public Wi-Fi hotspots and advertising capabilities.

Smart Parking Sensors

Smart Parking is changing the world through the delivery of comprehensive, end-to-end solutions that are focussed on harnessing the power of information from a global-scale network of sensors and devices to create new generations of parking services and beyond - delivering what is now known as the Internet of Things (IoT).

Smart Parking sensor technology is designed to detect the presence of parked vehicles, report overstays to infringement hand-held devices and to provide space availability data to digital guidance signs and smartphone applications, for management on-street or off-street.

Licence Plate Recognition

Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) uses a combination of Ocular Character Recognition (OCR) and machine learning techniques to analyse the number plates of vehicles.

Bayside Council invested in our state-of-the-art LPR technology to help curb anti-social behaviour and hooning in local streets and on the foreshore.

Any illegal activity will now be recorded, with the vehicle owner identified, and the video evidence supplied to local police, or the Council will issue infringement fines.

Object Recognition

Our object recognition library is extensive - allowing us to detect a large range of objects and cross reference all of them.

In collaboration with the LPR technology installed in Bayside Council, the technology has been extended to now capture anti-social behaviour on the streets.

This technology is capable of monitoring anti-social behaviour and hooning, including the ability to detect vandals defacing local businesses with graffiti, and the ability to monitor jet skis moving too close to swimmers.
